Active Dons take over the Holidays!

The Active Dons Easter Holiday Programme was a great success- welcoming a range of different children over the course of the two week break across different schools such as Liberty Primary School and Harris Merton and Wimbledon. The Holiday Course also gladly welcomed a total of 135 different children overall. The kids were looking forward to winding down and playing the sports they love with their friends that they hadn’t seen in a while and they got to take part in a range of activities such as Dodgeball, Basketball, Dance and Drama and Football.

Many children that attended the Active Dons programme receive Free School Meals and the programme has children from various different backgrounds across the local areas across Wimbledon and Merton. The sessions always started with warm-ups to get the minds and bodies active, and then it’s straight into the ball games activities that the kids love- such as Football Cricket and small sided games. Then at lunchtime the children recharged and got to socialise more by chatting away with their mates and eating hot meals such as Lasagna!

The Active Dons Programme is made to be accessible to all, and many of the children attending receive Free School Meals. Positively impacting the local community is a big factor in the success of the programme, and it gives children a motive to keep busy, fit and occupied during their time off school. The programme not only bolsters physical performance but gives children a chance to improve mentally and socially. The children also had a brilliant opportunity to hear from many AFC Wimbledon footballers- Nik Tsanev, Nesta Guiness Walker, William Nightingale, Jack Rudoni and Zach Robinson all came down and gave the children an opportunity to fire questions away. The participants asked them many questions such as their favourite players and what it is like to be a footballer. After this, awards were handed to children by players for their great work throughout the sessions, and these prizes included AFC Wimbledon bags and stationary.
