A special opportunity to play at Plough Lane!
On Wednesday the 4th of April, AFC Wimbledon welcomed local schools to participate in a football tournament, held on the pitch at the Cherry Red Records Stadium at Plough Lane! The stage was set at the famous stadium where thousands gather weekly and primary schools Wimbledon Park, Chesterton, Sheringdale, Thomas Battersea and Bellville arrived in their teams with parents. The teams included boys and girls from year 5 and 6, and soon after getting their kit ready, they sat down in the stands to listen to an introduction and ground rules from Foundation coaches Scott, Andy and Steven and Kai.
The kids were then let onto the pitch and were told where they will be playing for the first round of matches, and they were eager to get warmed up and play. They were ecstatic to be on the pitch of AFC Wimbledon, an opportunity that not many get and something that they will remember for life!
The first round kicked off, and after nerves had settled the kids got straight into the action. There were some impressive performances all around, along with some spectacular goals and skills. Sheringdale, Belleville and Thomas Battersea started off fantastically, winning their games in the first round, however in the second round it switched over with Chesterton gaining an important win! The latter rounds saw lots of goals in all games, and kids had stand out performances all over the pitch.
It was a truly fantastic opportunity for all involved to be able to play at a professional stadium for the first time in their lives, and coach Scott added to this by saying that in his long coaching career he has never played at Plough Lane, so the kids should be very grateful that they got this opportunity and it will certainly live long in their memory. The kids will have something to brag about when they see their school friends next week!
