From Uncertainty to Opportunity: How DIVERT Helped LB Find His Direction

A 19-year-old from London is rebuilding his future after engaging with the DIVERT programme delivered in partnership with AFC Wimbledon Foundation.

LB first connected with DIVERT in July 2025 after being met in Wandsworth Police Custody following his first arrest. Facing uncertainty and anxiety about his situation, the initial priority was simple: wellbeing, stability and consistent support.

From the beginning, LB showed strong potential. Polite, punctual and ambitious, he had already gained experience working in food-chain restaurants and construction, holding a CSCS card and demonstrating a solid work ethic. However, his real ambition lay elsewhere - in hospitality, with long-term aspirations of attending culinary school and becoming a professional chef.

“It’s been great working with DIVERT and Daniel,” LB said. “For a little over half a year they’ve consistently offered me help in finding work, bouncing back in life and understanding my situation, leading to making plans and decisions for my benefit.”

While his case remained ongoing, LB stayed engaged through regular check-ins. Once the case was resolved with no further action, relieving a major source of stress, he was able to refocus fully on his future.

Although DIVERT did not have a direct culinary pathway available at the time, the support remained practical and solution-focused. Within a week, LB was introduced to Executive Chef Paul Danabie, gaining first-hand insight into professional kitchen life. The experience strengthened his motivation and clarified his goals.

That introduction led to a new opportunity with MEP Hospitality Staffing, providing LB with paid work across quality venues, alongside training and progression opportunities. Nearly two months on, he has been working consistently and is positive about the direction his life is taking.

Now significantly more confident and less anxious, LB is continuing to build experience, skills and professional credentials within the hospitality sector. With a trusted relationship through DIVERT, structured development and a clear long-term ambition, he is focused on sustaining his progress and moving steadily towards his culinary goals.

DIVERT works with young people at pivotal moments, offering support, accountability and practical pathways into employment — helping them make informed choices and build safer, more independent futures.
