“Playing football with AFC Wimbledon Foundation is the highlight of my WEEK”

These sessions have helped me build my confidence and improved my football skills
— Alexandra Lupano

AFC Wimbledon Foundation’s popular Women’s Rec sessions have helped build the confidence of the Lupano sisters, Steph and Alexandra, who have now stepped up to enter the group into tournaments.

Steph joined two years ago, when the Foundation first started providing football sessions for women, partly funded by St. George’s Hospital Charity for workers at the hospital. When the session was expanded to include any women interested, Steph invited her sister Alexandra to join as well.

Having enjoyed the coaching and the inclusive environment, the sisters have helped to organise friendlies and enter tournaments with other women’s teams. To support this they have set up an X account, formerly known as Twitter, @WombleDonsWFC, so they can reach out to teams more easily.

Nicole Jones, our Female Football Development Officer, lauded their impact: “The Lupano sisters have been attending the sessions for around 2 years now, and have done a fantastic job at building a welcoming, inclusive, and enjoyable environment. Additionally,  the pair help with finding, and organising fixtures and tournament, which I know the players are massively grateful for!”

The players and coaches are very inclusive and welcoming. We all have a lot of fun and everyone gets on well

One of AFC Wimbledon Foundation’s three key pillars is to Champion Sustainable Sports Participation for Women and Girls, to boost the number playing football and keeping active.

We need more funding so we can engage more women and girls in our community to get active and stay active.
