Women at the Game 2023

On Saturday 30 women and girls experienced their first live football game here at Plough Lane.

Women at the Game is an initiative set up by the late Jacqui Forster in 2015. The aim is to give women and girls their first taste of live football in a welcoming and friendly environment. At AFC Wimbledon we're committed to inclusivity, and we strive to make watching football more accessible and enjoyable to all, regardless of their age, gender or background.

Female participation in football is improving, however, we know there is still a lack of female players in our community and supporters across our club. One of our key goals is to overcome the barriers new players and fans face both playing and watching the beautiful game.

Our guests on Saturday and Sunday included participants of our women and girls' activities, generous donors who support our work and pupils from Burntwood, a local all girls’ school. Saturday featured a number of activities at Plough Lane for those who attended, including witnessing the unveiling of a new installation celebrating the Women’s Team, having met some of the players. Sunday was a resounding success for the Women’s Team, winning 5-0 against Ashford Town to reach the Capital Cup Final, where they will face either London Bees or Arsenal U21’s.

It was great for the Foundation to be able to lead the WATG initiative this year and welcome so many of our participants to enjoy the match day experience at Plough Lane. It was inspiring for our guests to meet the Womens’ Team and witness the unveiling of a new installation, celebrating their players prior to the match. There were lots of smiling faces and the feedback has been excellent, with many commenting on what an enjoyable and unique Mother’s Day weekend experience it was. We can’t wait for next year and to continue championing women & girls engagement with AFC Wimbledon, in the stands and in the community!
