Covid-19 response: Dons Local Action Group
Dons Local Action was created by AFC Wimbledon fans and AFC Wimbledon Foundation to originally help residents of Merton; we have now expanded this to help residents across Merton, Kingston and Wandsworth.
During the difficult challenges brought about by Covid-19 we quickly formed collaborative partnerships with various organisations, such as Old Rutlishians, Old Wimbledonians, Merton Mutual Aid, and other Merton charities.
Food collections take place at supermarkets across Kingston, Merton and Wandsworth asking shoppers to kindly donate spare food items for those in need. This weekend, we will be distributing 1000+ one week food parcels. We are supporting a huge range of different groups- a women’s refuge charity, homeless shelters, regular packages to St Georges, Kingston, and St Helier Hospital, Wimbledon, New Malden, and St Helier Ambulance Stations, and care homes. We are working with local foodbanks, supporting them with essential supplies.
We need your support to keep this vital work going, in particular more volunteers for supermarket collection shifts. Please get in touch with the contacts below if you can help out, or message us on Facebook and Twitter.
As ever, if you need our assistance, if you’re shopping for elderly neighbours and need a hand, if you’re going to the shops but should be self-isolating, we can help keep you safe. Our phone number is 020 3301 4511 (9am-6pm), and our email is dla@afcwimbledonfoundation.org.uk
Foundation Projects
The Foundation continues to run online versions of its key programmes, Premier Stars, PL Kicks, London Kicks, Get Set to Go – Mind in Kingston and NCS National Citizens Service during this period. Our staff team are maintaining contact with participants through various forms of social media and setting physical challenges and activities to keep young people engaged.
It has also been working with key partners locally to inform them of DLAG related activity and provide information on the referral process.
Foundation Phone Service
The staff team has also been busy in phoning round 500 season ticket holders aged 70+ for a social call to check their well being over this period. Manager Glyn Hodges, Nick Dawes and first team players have also been involved in this process and we hopefully have been able to bring some comfort and reduce social isolation through this work.
If you would to contact us to arrange a social call please email enquiries@afcwimbledonfoundation.org.uk
