International Women’s Day and Women At The Game

On Saturday 16th March, AFC Wimbledon Foundation ran an International Women’s Day Special for our participants!

We invited mothers, aunties, sisters, grandma’s, carers and friends to participate alongside our Wildcats session at Wimbledon Park in a morning of fun activities, competitions and games for both girls and women.

The morning was followed by the AFC Wimbledon’s annual Women at the Game event at Plough Lane. We invited participants and their parents from our Girls Wildcats and Squad programmes to attend their first ever football game, to cheer on The Dons and gain a taste of what live football is all about.

Women at the Game is an initiative set up by the late Jacqui Forster in 2015. The aim is to give women and girls their first taste of live football in a welcoming and friendly environment. At AFC Wimbledon Foundation we aim to continue Jacqui's legacy by making this an annual event. We are committed to inclusivity and we strive to make watching football more accessible and enjoyable to all, regardless of their age, gender or background.

It is great that we can provide these kinds of opportunities for our participants, and I can’t wait to organise more of these events in the future
— Nicole Jones, Women and Girls Development Officer

The afternoon was an amazing opportunity to come together and watch a game of football with other women, meet AFC Wimbledon Women's players and other inspiring women within the Club. The group were also given a tour of the stadium, including visiting the Club Shop and Fan Zone.

One Mother, who attended with her daughter, said “the event at the stadium was very nice to create a real bond between the families – you made the day extra special for us all”.

We had a fantastic team of volunteers to welcome the participants, ensuring that it was safe, fun and memorable experience for all!

I’m delighted that AFC Wimbledon Foundation ran this year’s Women at the Game event which introduces new women to our club and watching live football. It was great to meet them and tell them about our club and the great work the Foundation does
— Jane Lonsdale, AFC Wimbledon Foundation Trustee and Chair of Women of Wimbledon Supports Assocation
