Bringing our club and community together - Over 7,000 Join AFC Wimbledon Foundation at Merton Big Sports Day 2025

A record crowd came together for this year’s Merton Big Sports Day – and AFC Wimbledon Foundation and Our Club were at the heart of the action.

More than 7,000 children, adults, and families filled Morden Park on Sunday for the annual celebration of sport, community, and wellbeing. The Foundation and Club teamed up to deliver a day packed with fun, activity, and connection.

Fans had the chance to meet first-team players Leo Young, Kai Jennings, and Harry Sidwell, while the League Two Play-Off Trophy proved to be the star attraction, with hundreds lining up for photos. Even Haydon the Womble couldn’t resist joining in, whizzing down the event’s zip line to cheers from the crowd.

The Foundation delivered a wide range of free taster sessions, helping residents of all ages and abilities try new activities and discover opportunities to stay active throughout the year. Coaches, volunteers, and partners were on hand to signpost families to local programmes and encourage everyone to take part.

Reflecting on the day, Cheryl Gill, Head of Programmes at AFC Wimbledon Foundation, said:

“Yesterday’s Merton Big Sports Day was a fantastic celebration of community and our Foundation value of Togetherness. Seeing families, friends and neighbours come together to get active and make new connections reflects the mission of AFC Wimbledon Foundation – bringing our club and community together. Events like this remind us just how powerful sport can be in creating opportunities for everyone to get involved.”

Building stronger community connections

The day created thousands of positive touchpoints between the Club, Foundation, and local families, strengthening relationships and building awareness of year-round opportunities to get active.

The Foundation will now follow up with schools, families, and community partners to help more people access its programmes in football, inclusion, and health and wellbeing.

Thank you

A huge thank you to all the coaches, volunteers, Club colleagues, and community partners who made the event a success.
